There are many interesting and strange traditions around the world to celebrate the passing of the new year, here are a few examples to give a sense of the diversity of these celebrations:

Scotland

In Scotland, it is traditional to gather at midnight and throw pieces of shortbread or cake out the window to ward off evil spirits. And, those who don’t want to waste any food whatsoever, they can wear tartan clothes and play bagpipes to greet the New Year.

Italy

In Italy, people like to eat lentils to attract luck and prosperity in the coming year.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, it is customary to jump into the ocean at midnight to celebrate the New Year.

Greece

In Greece, it is customary to throw pots and plates out of the window to symbolize the departure of the previous year’s worries and problems. And if the noise of broken pots annoys some people, they can also throw water and vinegar on the windows and doors of the house to ward off evil spirits.
