Fans of Kratos and Atreus, get ready to see your favorite video game God of War coming soon as a live-action series on Amazon Prime Video. It’s now confirmed: a series based on the popular video game has been officially ordered by the American streaming platform.
Written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men), with Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) as showrunner – the three will sit alongside Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang and Jeff Ketcham of Santa Monica Studio (the developers of God of War), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions and Roy Lee – God of War series version is co-produced by Sony Picture Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions.
According to early reports, the adaptation will be based on the 2018 game and will follow Kratos’ supposed attempt to “retire” to Midgar. When his wife dies, Kratos and his son Atreus set out on a journey to the highest peak to spread her ashes. “Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world,” U.S. magazine Variety said.
“‘God of War’ is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, added. “Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”
The latest God of War installment, titled God of War Ragnarok, was released this fall. While the franchise has consisted of several titles adapted for a variety of PlayStation consoles since 2005, the saga was rebooted in a game released in 2018 whose plot seems to serve as the basis here for the story told in Amazon’s upcoming series.
