Berlin is known for its rich street culture and vibrant nightlife. And, it’s these very elements that have inspired the Berlin-based brand, Civilist, to create unique and stylish skatewear. In their latest collaboration with Vans, Civilist has reimagined the iconic Vans Skate Half Cab pair, paying homage to the city’s winter nights.
Civilist’s designs are a reflection of the city’s winter landscape, with its dark blue sky and the fleeting reflections of passing cars and streetlights. The only thing that stands out in the heart of winter is the iconic TV tower and its flashing lights. For the residents of Berlin, it’s not uncommon to see black shoes hanging from the train wires, adding to the city’s street culture.
The latest Skate Half Cab pair takes inspiration from these elements and presents them in a stylish and functional form. The all-black shoes feature a nylon upper and a jacquard pattern, with a dark blue stripe paying homage to the city’s winter sky. The shoes also have a hint of hiking inspiration, with easy-to-tie rope laces.
Civilist was started by two friends in 2009, Alex Flach and Andreas Hesse, who wanted to create a place for skaters and artists to hang out and share their passion. They chose a former art gallery as their location and kept the minimalist design of the space. Civilist has hosted many events and exhibitions over the years, featuring local and international artists such as Ed Templeton, Stefan Marx, Brian Anderson and more. Civilist also supports the Berlin skate scene by sponsoring local skaters and organizing contests.
