Google’s tireless efforts to integrate its powerful AI language model, Gemini, into Gmail are gaining momentum. Hot on the heels of the recently revealed Gemini-powered reply suggestions, a new “Summarize this email” button has been unearthed within the Android app.
This feature is particularly exciting for anyone wrestling with overflowing inboxes. Currently, Google Workspace Labs users enjoy the privilege of leveraging Gemini’s summarizing capabilities on the web version of Gmail. However, details regarding its transition to the mobile app, available on both Android and iOS, remained shrouded in secrecy.
Recent discoveries within Gmail version 2024.03.31.621006929 offer an overview of this function. Code sleuth AssembleDebug, through a tip to PiunikaWeb, managed to snag a glimpse of the upcoming “Summarize this email” functionality within the Android app. The button is strategically positioned just beneath the email’s title, readily accessible for users.
It’s important to note that this feature is still in its infancy. Tapping the button at this stage yields no tangible results. The anticipated outcome is a pop-up window appearing at the bottom of the screen, presenting a concise, bullet-point summary of the email content. This approach mirrors the existing web version, with the side panel replaced by a more mobile-friendly pop-up format.
AssembleDebug also detected a curious “Gemini” entry nestled within the three-dot menu on the top bar. Currently, this entry lacks any functionality, simply displaying a blank page adorned with the Gemini logo and text. Speculation suggests it might evolve into an equivalent of the Gemini side panel found within Gmail for Workspace Labs users, but only time and development progress will confirm this.
As with most experimental features, these additions require manual activation via feature flags. Consequently, widespread availability won’t happen overnight. Google’s development timeline hinges on encountering minimal roadblocks along the way, with launch potentially occurring within the next few weeks or months.
Personally, I’m eager to unleash Gemini’s AI prowess on the deluge of newsletters cluttering my inbox. Summarizing lengthy emails would be a game-changer, allowing me to quickly grasp the gist and prioritize efficiently.
