Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, the London-based designer known for his signature showmanship and subversive touch, recently brought his extravagant designs to Milan during Fashion Week.
In a preview, Jeffrey explained that the move to Milan was motivated by similarities between the city and his hometown of Glasgow, including the industrial nature and the “chatty, friendly and passionate” people. He also noted that finding a business backer in Italian group Tomorrow Ltd. played a role in the decision.
The designer’s Fall 2023 collection was inspired by John Byrne’s 1987 play The Slab Boys Trilogy and was appropriately divided into three acts. The show opened with working class heroes in oversize boxy tailoring, a jacket with an apron over it, and a kilt layered on pants. The next act featured “Poser” models in Fair Isle knits and maximalist prints, which were the standout of the show. Finally, the “Snakes” strutted down the catwalk in fluid looks splashed with all-over newsprints, evoking a similar aesthetic to John Galliano’s past designs.
