The JW Anderson’ Men’s Fall/Winter 2023 and Women’s Pre-Fall 2023 collections drew references from Anderson’s past, childhood, and what he described as straightforward designs.
Many of the looks were conceptual, such as a T-shirt with a pillow attached to it and a model with tomatoes painted on them, but overall, the collection was less surreal than Anderson’s previous shows.
One of the highlights of the collection was Anderson’s collaboration with Wellipets – the British maker of rubber boots with frog eyes, famously worn by Prince William and Harry when they were children – which featured mules and a frog take on his viral Pigeon Clutch Bag.
The clothing featured slight tweaks with Anderson’s usual irreverence, with nods to his FW13 collection, such as leather re-dos of the frilled shorts. Vintage men’s erotica was applied like trompe-l’œil on fine, soft jersey singlets. The show invite was an oversized sim card that turned into jacrons on the back of pants, a nipple cover, and frequently appeared on necklines, emphasizing the wearer’s connection to the brand.
