The invitation to doublet‘s fall show promised an escape, as indicated by the colorful ticket. However, designer Masayuki Ino decided to showcase his latest collection outdoors, making it difficult to avoid the chilly weather in Paris. Despite the harsh conditions, the show began with a lively performance of characters that were both emoji-like and out of this world.
Ino, the recipient of the 2018 LVMH Young Fashion Designers Prize, used the theme of blending the human and animal worlds to touch on the topic of diversity. He stated that “in Star Wars, creatures from different parts of the galaxy coexist as friends” and “in the jungle, all animals live in harmony, it’s only humans who cause problems by isolating themselves.“
Although the amusement park setting may have been just for show, the collection still had plenty of playful elements such as fishtail skirts with real fishtails and comical sweaters with eyeholes. However, on closer examination, one could also find expertly tailored shirts, desirable sweats and tees made from recycled cotton, and tops that fit all sizes.
The collection also included stunning velvet dresses adorned with pearls, unique knitwear techniques reminiscent of sargassum, delicate handknits, tailored overcoats, and a one-shouldered tee with the graphic “I (heart) D.” The meaning of the “D” remains unclear, but whether it stands for Doublet or diversity, it was a successful addition to the collection.
