BMW might be resurrecting the spirit of two legendary vehicles – the modern Z8 roadster and the classic 503 – with a potential limited-production run of the stunning BMW Concept Skytop. This two-seat wonder, unveiled at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este classic car show, is designed to be the ultimate open-air driving companion, transforming from a luxurious coupe to a wind-in-your-hair roadster with the touch of a button.
According to Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, the automaker is considering an extremely limited production run of the BMW Concept Skytop. “It is a truly unique and exotic design that offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level, comparable to its historic ancestors, like the Z8 or 503,” he remarked at a recent media roundtable.

The roadster’s taut, muscular surfaces are defined by precise lines that direct the vehicle’s volume rearward. Discreet winglets integrated into the door shoulders replace traditional handles. From above, the prominent hood and signature BMW shark-nose with illuminated kidney grille pay homage to the Z8.
Leather adorns both the roll-over bar behind the seats, which is combined with B-pillar fins and a fully retractable rear window, as well as the two removable roof panels. These panels can be conveniently stowed in a dedicated luggage compartment.
Under the sculpted hood lies BMW’s most potent V8, the 4.4-liter, 625-horsepower TwinPower Turbo from the M8 Cabrio Competition. This powerplant promises exhilarating performance to match the Concept Skytop’s head-turning style.

While initially conceived as a singular creation, the overwhelmingly positive reaction has prompted BMW to consider a micro-batch of 20 to 25 BMW Concept Skytop roadsters, ensuring exclusivity for a select group of discerning drivers. While an official release date hasn’t been announced, whispers suggest a late 2025 or early 2026 arrival, giving car enthusiasts something exciting to look forward to.
