Yohji Yamamoto‘s iconic Y-3 label has teamed up with adidas once again, but this time they’re pushing boundaries with their Spring/Summer 2024 Chapter 1 collection. Forget athleisure as you know it – this is “Contra-Natural“, a world where the organic seamlessly collides with the synthetic to create unexpected beauty.
Chapter 1 throws conventional sportswear out the window. Think sharp angles, precise tailoring and bold shapes, all adorned with digitally distorted floral prints created from scans of real flowers. Workwear influences peek through, adding a touch of utilitarian grit. The color palette reflects the core tension of the collection: classic Y-3 black, gray and white are joined by earthy tones like clay brown and mesa, alongside pops of shadow red and refreshing mint. This new color quartet symbolizes nature reclaiming the man-made, transforming rust into mint, a visual exploration of the collection’s theme.
Chapter 1 also reimagines iconic adidas Originals through Yamamoto’s avant-garde lens. Familiar silhouettes such as the Stan Smith and the Country are given a luxurious makeover with premium leather and piping details. Newcomers like the Y-3 GSG9 LOW join the party, while the progressive Y-3 GENDO makes a triumphant return. The Y-3 KYASU gets both a low-top and high-top treatment, and the brand introduces the KYASU SLIP-ON, which combines the shoe’s signature outsole with a sleek primeknit upper.
The Chapter 1 campaign is a story of power and unity captured through the lens of London’s Bugeisha Club. This international collective of diverse women and non-binary individuals embodies the spirit of the collection, fusing artistry with athleticism. Photographer Erika Kamano, director Francis Plummer and stylist Robbie Spencer join forces to create a narrative of serenity, discipline and the synergy of body, mind and community. We witness the tension between effortless flow and rigorous training as four leading Bugeisha Club members present the collection, including Mana Kimura-Anderson, Becky Tun Pe, April Gunawardena, and Lara Swift.
