The WOOYOUNGMI brand, founded 20 years ago in Seoul, has always been heavily influenced by the fashion mentality of Paris. However, in recent years, South Korean culture has become increasingly popular in the Western world. This has led designer Woo Youngmi to reflect on the historical relationship between South Korea and the West in the brand’s Fall-Winter 2023 Collection.
The collection is inspired by the Pavillon de Corée, a building constructed in the style of South Korean palaces but located in Paris, which was unveiled at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Instead of focusing on the pop culture that defines Western views of South Korea today, the collection imagines the artistic exchange between Paris and Seoul at the turn of the century through a 21st century lens.
The collection features a mix of contemporary and historical elements, including riding coats, sack suits, and riding boots, as well as jewelry from the Silla kingdom, which ruled South Korea for a thousand years. The collection also features a play on proportions, with macro and micro elements, and a color palette inspired by the volcanic landscape of Jeju island.
