Inspired by the history of black cowboys, American denim brand Lee and label The Brooklyn Circus have collaborated to release a capsule that of course honors the iconic fabric whose image and use is closely associated with American cowboys and workers.
For this collaboration, Ouigi Theodore, founder and creative director of Brooklyn Circus, reinterpreted Lee’s few archival silhouettes with his personal workwear and western inspired touches. In doing so, the two partners paid a vibrant and moving tribute to the black cultural influence on Western America.
“Power to the people. Our goal is to tell the story of our community through meaningful partnerships like this one with Lee,” says Theodore. “Brooklyn Circus finds its inspiration in the pages of history, so collaborating with a brand like Lee to highlight the history of Western America and its black workers made perfect sense.“
“Lee can concretely draw from different cultures. Designing this collaboration was very exciting, as we mixed western, workwear and urban fashion while keeping the integrity of each of the inspirations,” said Sedgwick Cole Jr, Lee Global Director of Men’s Collections. “Every detail weaves stories: from the Japanese selvedge denim to the Melton wool fabric to the exclusive patterns and colors. The end result is a unique collection that makes you say, ‘This is so new and fresh.’“
Key pieces in the collection include the cowboy jacket inspired by the iconic Lee 101 jacket, the unisex melton wool and leather Varsity Jacket embellished with an embroidered illustration of a cowboy on the back, the Lee x Brooklyn Circus Cowboy Jeans made of selvedge denim and inspired by Lee’s 1925 Cowboy Jean and a unisex Whizit suspender suit made of selvedge denim that pays homage to the workers who built America.

The Lee x Brooklyn Circus collection is available at lee.com and thebkcircus.com, in Lee and Brooklyn Circus stores and at select retailers including American Rag (Los Angeles), City Workshop, Moda (Pittsburgh), End (UK), Double5 (Italy), Cultizm.com (Germany), Royal Cheese (France), Hepcat (Sweden) and Arborator (Netherlands). Prices range from $110 to $385 USD, and the most expensive piece is the Varsity jacket, priced at $1,200 USD.
