In the realm of luxury fashion, craftsmanship is the cornerstone that defines exceptional quality and timeless appeal. TOD’S, the historic Italian house, brings forth the essence of hand-made artistry through their latest project, “THE ART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP.”
British photographer Tim Walker, in collaboration with TOD’S, has masterfully reimagined iconic products and symbols, paying tribute to the craftsmanship that lies at the heart of Italian luxury.
During Milan Design Week 2023, TOD’S unveiled Tim Walker’s interpretation of their iconic Gommino and Di Bag. Walker’s fantastical vision breathed new life into these symbols of Italian craftsmanship. With oversized proportions and surreal scenarios, he illustrated a world where raw materials and skilled artisans took center stage.
Tim Walker was profoundly inspired by his visit to TOD’S main production studio in Brancadoro. Here, he met the artisans responsible for crafting the luxury brand’s exquisite products. In his photographs, Walker magnifies their tools – needles, threads, scissors, tape measures, and brushes – with a touch of humor and boundless creativity. He quotes, “In this increasingly digital world, where so many things are created in series by machines, the value of craftsmanship is becoming more precious.“
Diego Della Valle, president and CEO of the TOD’S Group, expresses his appreciation for Walker’s work: “The art of Italian living and excellence in craftsmanship are values dear to TOD’S, and seeing them reinterpreted by Tim Walker allows us to transmit them to younger generations in a language that speaks to them.“
Walker’s photographs showcased in “THE ART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP” project feature prominent figures from the fashion industry, including British fashionista Jerry Stafford. The series of visual nods in the project not only celebrates the artisans and their expertise but also reminds the fashion world of the significance of craftsmanship as the foundation of luxury.
Unveiled on multiple platforms and presented as an exhibition during Milan Design Week 2023, “THE ART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP” will travel globally throughout the year. This project stands as a testament to the unparalleled artistry and expertise of the artisans at Brancadoro, who continue to perpetuate the TOD’S tradition of craftsmanship.
