The designers selected for the Future73 project are an impressive group of world-renowned creators and designers, including Edison Chen (CLOT), Samuel Ross (A-COLD-WALL), Suzanne Oude Hengel, Nina Chanel Abney, Humberto Leon, and Christopher Raeburn (RAEBURN). Each designer worked closely with Timberland’s design team to create a unique approach to the Original Timberland® Boot, resulting in a range of exciting new features such as new knitting technologies, ultra-thick rubber soles, and artwork on the boot’s surface. The project also resulted in the creation of the world’s first 6-Inch Boot designed to be disassembled through Timberloop, the brand’s recycling platform.
“Working alongside these incredible creative minds was a true honor,” said Drieke Leenknegt, Timberland’s marketing director. “Each in their own way has taken our Original Timberland® Boot and transformed it through the lens of their own vision of innovation and boldness, hinting at what this icon might look like in the years to come. These are their visions and our legacy, and together we are shaping new frontiers for the boot world.“
The designers went beyond just designing the boots and created a line of clothing to complement each look. They also had the opportunity to create a second futuristic shoe design based on the Timberland silhouette of their choice. The Future73 collections will be released throughout the year at influential fashion and streetwear retailers, Timberland flagship stores, and online. The designers will host workshops to share their vision and inspire the next generation of pioneers during each capsule’s launch.
Timberland has a rich history rooted in workwear, but the brand has also made a name for itself on city streets around the world, particularly after being embraced by hip-hop culture in the 1990s. To honor this community, Timberland is partnering with CNSTNT:DVLPMNT, a start-up founded by Timberland footwear designer Chris Dixon, to host design workshops in key cities along the East Coast.
The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Original Timberland® Boot will continue throughout the year, including a documentary chronicling the brand’s defining moments in innovation, fashion, and culture, two special anniversary collections, and pop-up events in three cities central to Timberland’s history: London, Shanghai, and New York.
