Founded in 1993, SONGZIO is a South Korean fashion brand that has established its unique identity through its creative process of painting on black. Each collection begins with a black canvas where the foundational artwork is painted, setting the tone for the collection’s aesthetic.
One of the defining characteristics of SONGZIO’s art and collections is a sense of duality. The brand’s avant-garde pattern making and draping, unique silhouettes, and artisanal applications of its original artwork creates a sense of Western modernism coexisting in Oriental elegance. This theme is heavily present in the brand’s 23FW collection, titled “Reflexion.”
The “Reflexion” collection captures the coexisting dualities in the human soul. The pieces are heavy in stillness yet fluid in motion, sharp yet delicate, rough yet elegant, and dark yet ablaze. The collection is a self-reflection of who we are and who we appear to be, represented by the central artwork of a young boy in self-reflection, which is subtly present throughout the collection.
One of the standout pieces in the collection is the “boy gladiator” look, which combines the heart and spirit of a gladiator with a delicate appearance. The armored-like pleated jackets, wide plackets in the shape of breastplates, and skirt pants inspired by Roman skirts emanate a gladiator-like appearance, while the multi-layered garments, asymmetrical drapes, and silhouettes represent the chaos of the heart.
The collection is entirely hand-made in SONGZIO’s ateliers in Seoul, emphasizing the brand’s savoir-faire. From the original artwork to the bold and asymmetrical drapes, deep pleats and folds, meticulous embroideries, and hand-painted leather and jersey, the touch of the hand plays an important role in developing the collection.
Dominated by black and brown hues with strokes of turquoise and lime green, this collection is noted for its heavy use of vegan leather, aluminum-coated leather, and metallic fabrics to create a dual appearance that is both antique and futuristic, rough yet refined, dark yet gleaming.
