Hublot, a brand synonymous with redefining the boundaries of watchmaking, has cultivated an unwavering passion for the arts for over a decade. This commitment has manifested itself in collaborations with avant-garde artists and designers. Among these, the union with Samuel Ross stands out as a fusion of unique perspectives and visions, culminating in the awe-inspiring Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A.
A timepiece redefined
The Hublot-Ross partnership took flight in 2020, culminating in an intense three-year journey to reimagine watch components, from the bezel and dial to the case and bracelet. Ross’s dynamic approach, akin to that of an artist shaping and reshaping a clay sculpture, resulted in the transformation of the watch case into a striking gray monochrome ensemble. This design marvel can be paired with one of three different rubber straps, available in bold green, classic black or pristine white.
To emphasize its industrial charm, Samuel Ross covered the entire case in shiny micro-blasted titanium, a treatment that was extended to the clasp, which is a marvel of craftsmanship with the Hublot logo laser-engraved with precision. The gray rubber-covered crown completes the monochrome look, while the tourbillon bridge takes on a neutral hue that effortlessly matches the strap options available.
As Samuel Ross eloquently put it, “We are focused on crafting refined, minimal and expressive timepieces. SR_A, looks to expand, re-define and establish timeless icons of design, reflecting a spirit of innovation, optimism and craft. I firmly believe we need all three properties to usher in the next chapter of luxury.”
Combining artistic vision and watchmaking
Ross’ collaboration with Hublot began with a sculpture in 2020, a work of art symbolizing four decades of Hublot’s journey. Combining aerodynamic designs with the geometric wonders of nature, Ross masterfully contrasts advanced technical components with classic nuances, seamlessly aligning himself with Hublot’s revered “Art of Fusion” philosophy. His play with transparency and the innovative combination of rubber and metal foster a harmony between natural elements and industrial flair.
Commenting on the collaboration, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said, “What defines the true nature of a collaboration between an artist and a brand? It is bringing together the best of two worlds while deeply respecting and building on the true nature of two visions. The Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross, launched in 2022, has ticked all the boxes of a successful and genuine collaboration, yet one in which Ross had left a powerful imprint through his aesthetic, functional and purposeful take on our watch, remaining true to who we are while shedding light from a different angle. His new iteration represents the next steps of a never-ending story demonstrating how creativity and engineering must never be taken for granted in consistently pushing existing boundaries to enhance our own creations.”
Nature’s geometry meets precision engineering
Embracing the hexagonal pattern that evokes the precision of the natural world, Ross has created a timepiece that reflects the watch’s inherent functionality. Through meticulous design choices, from polished and brushed titanium plates to perforations that create a sense of fluidity, the watch embodies an ergonomic, lightweight and enduring work of art.
This exquisite timepiece is driven by the 282-component Manufacture HUB6035 caliber, which beats at 3 Hz and has a 72-hour power reserve. True to its exclusivity, this new version, like its predecessor, is available in a limited edition of only 50 pieces.
