Philippe Starck‘s latest venture with Alessi brings a fresh flavor to furniture. Unveiled at Milan’s Salone del Mobile, the “Poêle” collection combines the practicality of cookware with the elegance of design, a first for Starck in furniture for the Italian brand. Playful yet refined, the series includes a chair, armchair, coat hanger and stool, all of which pay homage to the culinary world with a nod to the classic frying pan.

The marriage of beech wood and metal, a salute to the robust steel of pans, marks a departure from the ordinary, cementing the collaboration’s commitment to innovation and Alessi‘s expertise in homeware. The Poêle Chair, Starck’s brainchild, began whimsically as an image of a frying pan with legs, but soon became a testament to adaptability, using high-end metalworking technology to bring a culinary icon into the living room.

The charm of the collection lies in the way Starck turns the familiar upside down. The designer has taken Alessi’s renowned metalworking skills and channeled them into furniture that speaks a language of comfort and chic style. He reflects on the project with characteristic wit, recalling how the “Poêle” Chair began as a sketch, humorously comparing the legs of a chair to the handles of a frying pan, yet encapsulating a brilliant idea of repurposing high technology for multiple uses.

Alessi’s journey with Starck spans three decades, but the “Poêle” collection is a premiere in their shared history. Alberto Alessi, the company’s president, reflects on the longstanding desire to create furniture with Starck and celebrates the realization of that dream.

I’ve been trying to make a chair with Philippe Starck for about 20 years, and we finally did it,” he said. “I asked him if it was possible to design a chair that was made like a frying pan, using Alessi’s cold-pressed metal technology. As always with Starck, it started with a subversion.”
