Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron Limited Edition watch, a masterpiece that blends the Swiss watchmaking prowess with the spirit of one of the greatest baseball legends, Hank Aaron.
This timeless piece not only pays tribute to Aaron’s remarkable achievements in baseball but also highlights his humaneness and legacy beyond the diamond field.
Oris is no novice when it comes to creating breathtaking limited-edition timepieces. From the shimmering bodies of water to the silent calls for environmental protection, this brand has always marked its territory. Now, the Hölstein maestros have spun their magic again, dedicating their 2023 novelty, the Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron, to the legendary baseball figure and humanitarian, Hank Aaron.
Hank Aaron, a Baseball Hall of Famer, has left indelible footprints on the sands of baseball. In 1974, he swept the field by breaking Babe Ruth’s long-standing home run record. Nearly a quarter-century later, Major League Baseball commemorated his impressive performance by creating the Hank Aaron Award, acknowledging the best overall offensive player annually. Aaron, a man larger than life, was equally recognized for his benevolent activities. The establishment of the Chasing the Dream Foundation with his wife in 1994 earmarked Aaron’s commitment towards awarding scholarships to underprivileged children, showing the world that he batted as much for humanity as he did for the Braves. His enduring quote summarizes his profound outlook towards life: “I am not concerned with how I am perceived as a baseball player. I am concerned with how I am thought of as a human being.“
In honor of Aaron’s incredible journey, Oris has fashioned the Oris Hank Aaron Limited Edition. As part of the multi-day celebration of Hank Aaron’s legacy hosted by the Atlanta Braves in late July, past winners of the Hank Aaron Award will receive one of the 2,297 examples of this new timepiece. Being no stranger to American baseball, Oris has previously commemorated the legendary Roberto Clemente in 2020. But the Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron strides forward, paying homage to Hank Aaron and his iconic white, red, and blue jersey.
The Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron, at its core, remains true to its predecessor, the Big Crown Pointer Date, flaunting a 40mm stainless steel case. The domed sapphire crystal and a coin-edge style fluted bezel, inspired by vintage pilot’s watches, add a touch of antiquity. The model’s water resistance of 50 meters is guaranteed by an oversized winding crown at the 3 o’clock location. In a novel touch, the case back features an engraving of Aaron’s cross-handed batting stance.
The dial, however, is the pièce de résistance of the Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron. It showcases a white surface punctuated with blue and red accents, reflecting Aaron’s Braves jersey. The polished cathedral-style handset complements the blue-outlined red numerals for the hour markers, and a red-outlined blue minute track, setting this piece apart from its Big Crown Pointer Date siblings.
Powered by the Oris Caliber 754 automatic movement, similar to the standard-production models, this watch provides the reliability and performance expected from the brand. Its 38-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz) ensure the watch stays true to its pedigree.
Accompanying the Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron is a blue leather strap reminiscent of a baseball glove, with a white contrast stitching, and a secondary white, red, and blue NATO-style fabric strap. Furthermore, the watch is housed in a special edition presentation box that features Aaron’s famous “44” jersey number on the lid.
Retailing at $2,500 USD, the Oris Big Crown Hank Aaron is a limited series of 2,297 pieces, symbolizing Aaron’s record for the most career runs batted in (RBI). While there is a slight premium over the standard Big Crown Pointer Date collection, the package includes a secondary strap, and most importantly, this watch is a homage to a great humanitarian and athlete, Hank Aaron, marking it as a collector’s item. This keepsake ensures that even as the hands of time move forward, the legend of Hank Aaron never fades away.
