KIDILL artistic director Hiroaki Sueyasu is drawing inspiration from the work of film directors such as Spike Jonze and Harmony Korine, as well as the documentary film The Z-Boys for his Fall/Winter 2023 collection, which explores themes of skateboarding and Punk culture, and emphasizes the importance of self-expression and freedom.
Sueyasu’s collection is a reflection of his deep connection to his “core,” which he believes to be eternal. His collaboration with DC SHOES and DC skaters has allowed him to express his most present-tense emotions in the collection, which includes the use of military materials, multi-prints and a DIY aesthetic that evokes the atmosphere of old-school skateboarding.
In addition to these elements, Sueyasu also draws on the films of Wong Kar-wai to create a sense of smoky, dreary, and decadent chaos that contributes to the overall aesthetic of the collection. He also explores the gender gap through the combination of denim and girl prints, adding a unique interpretation of the “boy’s look” that emphasizes masculinity and charm.
Sueyasu’s collection is a reflection of his belief that immersing oneself in activities like skating can help to fill the void of depletion and dissatisfaction, and can lead to the discovery of a new reality and desire. He believes that this connection to one’s core and the pursuit of freedom is the key to true self-expression and personal style. As he once said, “Fashion saved me,” and he continues to be driven by the same impulse that led him to start creating in London.
