Unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2023 in Geneva, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Hybris Artistica Calibre 179 is a breathtaking fusion of technical prowess and artistic craftsmanship. Drawing on the legendary Golden Ratio, this exquisite timepiece showcases the ingenuity of the Manufacture’s Métiers Rares (Rare Handcrafts) artisans and the expertise of its engineers.
A Technical Tour-de-Force
The Calibre 179 represents the pinnacle of mechanical sophistication, featuring the fourth evolution of the multi-axis tourbillon developed specifically for the Reverso. This Duoface movement, shaped to fit the iconic rectangular Reverso case, displays a different time zone on each dial and includes a 24-hour indicator for the second time zone on the reverse side. The intricate design of the Gyrotourbillon is a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre‘s relentless pursuit of precision and mechanical efficiency.
Visually enthralling to observe as it pirouettes around its twin axes, the structure of the Gyrotourbillon is highly complex.

With 123 components, the Gyrotourbillon comprises an ultra-light titanium cage and a peripheral carriage mounted on ball bearings, rotating perpendicularly to each other at different speeds. The inner tourbillon cage completes a full rotation every 16 seconds, while the peripheral carriage rotates once per minute. The semi-spherical balance spring and the double-anchor shape of the Gyrolab balance wheel add both aesthetic refinement and efficiency.
A Showcase of Decorative Arts
The Reverso Hybris Artistica Calibre 179 features a stunning dark blue lacquer on the front and reverse dials, contrasting beautifully with the pink gold case. The front dial alludes to the Art Deco influence on the original Reverso design, while the reverse dial showcases the intricate tracery of the skeletonized hours-minutes ring and its supporting bridges.
The decoration on the reverse dial is a fascinating marriage of technology and tradition.
Approximately 14 hours of chamfering work is dedicated to the Gyrotourbillon cage alone, demonstrating La Grande Maison’s commitment to exceptional hand-craftsmanship.
Subtle Refinements for an Iconic Case
The Reverso case, designed according to the Golden Ratio, features a slide-and-swivel mechanism and a sunray pattern engraved on the inside of the cradle. The case’s Art Deco lines provide the perfect setting for the intricate decoration of the two dials of the Reverso Hybris Artistica Calibre 179.
Despite housing the complex 382-component Calibre 179 movement, the timepiece remains elegant and wearable, with a thickness of 13.63mm and refined lugs.
