Confirmed last summer with no real information being known at the moment, the season 2 of the hit Netflix series Squid Game is in full preparation, eagerly awaited by all fans.
While many rumors have been circulating since the confirmation of season 2, one of the latest is that veteran Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, who recently appeared in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, will join the cast of this sequel.
The rumor began to surface after actress and Leung’s wife Carina Lau shared images of her husband sitting with Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk on her Instagram account. Photographed during the couple’s visit to the 27th Busan International Film Festival – the Hong Kong movie star, who was revealed to Western audiences thanks to his amazing performances in Chungking Express (1994), Ashes of Time (1994), Happy Together (1997), and In the Mood for Love (2000), all four by Wong Kar-wai, received an award at the festival on Wednesday saluting his 40-year career – the images were accompanied by the caption “Ready for Squid Game?“
The possible participation of the 60-year-old Hong Kong actor in a South Korean series is not a surprise. Indeed, the interpreter of Xu Wenwu in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings spoke to Korea Herald as follows, “If there are roles for which I can overcome the language barrier, I would like to act in a Korean drama. If there is a role that doesn’t require me to speak like the characters in this film, maybe I can be in Korean dramas as well.” He also named Song Kang-ho (Parasite, The Host, Snowpiercer) and Jeon Do-yeon (The Housemaid, You Are My Sunshine) when asked which actors he would like to work with.
