Creative director Giuliano Calza has taken a more mature approach with his latest collection. Th GCDS Fall 2023 show, which was attended by singer Dua Lipa and friends, showcased a more subdued side of Calza with a focus on his love for his cat, Kittho.
The collection was inspired by Calza’s personal life and his love for his furry companion. The designer incorporated elements of his house and his cat into the clothing, including gray, tiger print, yellow (to match Kittho’s eye color), pink (as a nod to the cat’s favorite couch), and feathers (as they are the cat’s favorite toy). The result was a playful and quirky take on classic tailoring, with a mix of pinstripes, oversized outerwear, white shirting, corsets, black leather maxi-length skirts trimmed in feathers, elongated biker jackets, and neckties.
The show also featured some more playful pieces, such as tufty electric yellow sweaters, an orange-and-black tiger stripe gown, purses shaped like rotary telephones, and paw-shaped boots. The absence of streetwear in the collection suggests that Calza is moving away from his past loud and theme-driven shows and towards a more commercial direction.
This new collection should appeal to a different customer base for the GCDS brand and is likely to have a longer shelf life in stores. Although Kittho himself did not make an appearance, the show was a testament to Calza’s love for his cat and his desire to create a fun and quirky take on classic tailoring.
