In an era where fashion and sustainability are often viewed as parallel universes, Gabriela Hearst blurs the boundaries with her Resort 2024 Collection. Last Wednesday, under a peculiarly dystopian orange-hued New York sky, Hearst delved into the mystical world of ancient Druid culture, tying it seamlessly into her latest collection.
Inspired by society’s collective memory and her constant quest for sustainable fashion, Hearst contemplated the potential trajectory of our world had we upheld the Druids’ belief in shared ownership, respecting natural resources due to our profound understanding of the interconnectedness of the human and natural worlds.
Drawing from Peter Berrsford Ellis’s book on Druid culture, Hearst offered an intriguing reflection on the stark contrast between Roman and Druid principles of ownership. “The Romans based their laws on private ownership of land with property rights entirely vested on the head of the family, while the Druids always considered ownership collective,” Hearst noted, adding an extra layer of depth to her Resort 2024 Collection.
While the link between Druid culture and Hearst’s creations may not seem immediately clear, it takes shape in her steadfast commitment to using sustainably sourced materials and environmentally-friendly practices.
The ancient inspiration meshes effortlessly with Hearst’s minimalist aesthetic, gracing her collection with a color palette of black, ivory, light heather gray, deep bordeaux, blush, and deep fluorite blue. Tailoring takes center stage, with sharp, rounded shoulders in recycled double-face cashmere speaking to the brand’s eco-conscious ethos.
Men’s wear adheres to the same principles, featuring sharp tailoring in leather, wool silk cady, and ecological wool twill. Organic Japanese denim, treated with eco-friendly processes and adorned with patchwork detailing from deadstock cashmere, further demonstrates Hearst’s passion for sustainable fashion. The collection also showcases luxurious buttery suede and quilted clothing pieces, along with cashmere yarn in intricate cable knits.
“The pleasures of Hearst’s clothes encompass the visual, but equally, if not more, important is the way they feel on the body,” she says, highlighting the sensual tactility of her designs. The fusion of ancient wisdom and modern innovation in the Gabriela Hearst Resort 2024 Collection serves as a testament to the power of fashion as a platform for social discourse, encouraging us to question, reflect, and appreciate our shared human journey.
