Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud reveals the groundbreaking Chronomètre FB 3SPC, the latest addition to its collection at Watches and Wonders 2023 in Geneva. This exceptional Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB 3SPC is the first of its kind, boasting an innovative construction and a cylindrical balance-spring, and is inspired by the No. 26 decimal watch, a rare and exceptional creation. With official “chronometer” certification (ISO 3159 standard), this masterpiece represents a new approach to precision timekeeping, as well as a revival of historical horological transitions.

Chronometric filiation: COSC-certified with a cylindrical balance-spring

The Chronomètre FB 3SPC is part of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud’s third wristwatch collection. In line with the brand’s quest for reliability and precision, the new FB 3 collection breaks new ground with its innovative Calibre FB-SPC mechanical movement, based on a cylindrical balance-spring, a rare watchmaking speciality that Ferdinand Berthoud himself worked on. After extensive research and fine-tuning, the Calibre FB-SPC became the only movement of its kind to meet the precision timekeeping criteria of the COSC (ISO 3159 certification).

The mechanical hand-wound movement is the culmination of over three years of research and development, with every detail meticulously examined. The regulating organ is prominently displayed, allowing the cylindrical balance-spring to be admired throughout the three-day power reserve.

Stylistic filiation: pocket watch-inspired design

The FB 3 collection pays homage to the aesthetic legacy of Pierre-Louis Berthoud (known as “Louis Berthoud”), the nephew, student, and successor of Ferdinand Berthoud. The new round case, available in 18-carat white or rose gold, evokes the curves of early 19th-century pocket watches, such as the decimal watch No. 26.

The refined and coherent design of the FB 3 models features a single line that follows the curves of the domed crystal and slender polished bezel, extending harmoniously along the strap and lugs.

Aesthetic affiliation: architectural design highlighting every detail

Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud’s signature lies in creating movements with legible, graphic, and three-dimensional architecture. The mainplate of the Calibre FB-SPC is at the heart of the movement, with components assembled on either side.

The time indication is reduced to a minimum, with a peripheral inner bezel ring for hours and minutes, and small seconds at 6 o’clock. The rest of the dial is deliberately open, showcasing the aesthetics of the movement’s components and their arrangement.

Over 100 hours of decoration are dedicated to the movement’s 230 components to achieve the ultimate degree of perfection characteristic of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud creations.

Two exquisite versions

The Chronomètre FB 3SPC is available in two versions. The first features an 18-carat white gold case, 2N pale yellow gold movement components, and an eggshell-colored dial in sandblasted silver-toned brass. The second comes with an 18-carat 5N rose gold case, a black-varnished minutes track, and black-rhodium treated visible movement components. Both versions feature 18-carat gold hands inspired by a 1785 Ferdinand Berthoud astronomical regulator.

The gold used in the production of the Chronomètre FB 3SPC originates from the ethical sourcing process implemented by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President and Founder of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud and Co-President of Chopard.

A new territory of expression rooted in historical chronometry

The Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB 3SPC encapsulates the post-revolutionary years of the early 19th century when pocket watches entered a new technical era. By integrating stylistic elements from Louis Berthoud’s time, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud expands its collection to a new territory of expression while maintaining its historical roots in chronometry.

The exceptional level of finishing and quality remains unchanged, as the Chronomètre FB 3SPC adheres to the high standards of the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud brand. Due to the limited capacity of the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud workshop in Fleurier, the production of this timepiece is capped at a maximum of 25 units per year.
