Fashion designer Eli Russell Linnetz recently showcased his latest collection ERL Fall 2023 at the brand’s showroom in Paris, creating a buzz amongst the fashion crowd. Linnetz is known for his hands-on approach, photographing the accompanying zines for his collections himself. He belongs to a long line of narrative builders in fashion, but his clothes have a real-world appeal that sets him apart from his peers.
This season, Linnetz’s story follows a family who strike it rich on the Oregon trail, only to fall into dysfunction and deterioration over the generations. The zine, titled “Greed: The American Gold Rush,” paints a dystopian view of the American dream, reinforced by the use of imagery from the film “Easy Rider.” But despite this dark tale, the collection itself is Linnetz’s most upbeat yet.
Linnetz is fascinated with the various aspects of American life, from the stars and stripes of the flag to vintage prints and 1970s iron-on T-shirts. He had fun with his Wall Street-inspired pieces, collaging classic menswear plaids with surfboard illustrations on jackets and coats. Linnetz also pointed to his experience collaborating with Kim Jones at Dior Men for his push into tailoring, promising more in the upcoming seasons.
