Dr. Martens has partnered with New York’s famed museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art or The Met, to celebrate the “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” series by Japanese printmaker Hokusai.
Japanese art enthusiasts are undoubtedly familiar with it. The series “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji” of forty-six woodblock print made by the great master between 1831-1833 is part of the masterpieces of Japanese art whose most famous work is “The Great Wave“, also known under the official name of “Under the Wave off Kanagawa”. The first of the series “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji“, the work is Hokusai‘s most famous woodblock print and its composition made it an immediate success in Japan, then in Europe, where it was one of the sources of inspiration for the Impressionists.
Regularly celebrated by fashion brands, Hokusai’s works are once again in the spotlight with this first ever collaboration between Dr. Martens and The Met.
Paying homage to the importance of Hokusai’s works, the two partners have naturally set their sights on the masterpiece “The Great Wave” as well as “Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tokaido” of the great woodblock print master.
The first masterpiece is printed on the Met 1460 boot. Made from Masterpiece, a coated leather with a fine grain texture designed to imitate a canvas, the boot is also detailed with antique gold eyelets and tonal laces with antique gold tips. A durable DMS sole, Dr. Martens’ signature yellow stitching and a buckle at the heel complete the silhouette’s design.
Hokusai’s second masterpiece, “Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tokaido,” was chosen for the other model in the collaboration: the Met 1461 shoe. It is made of the same grained leather and features the image of a crowd gathered together for a picnic under the cherry blossoms in Gotenyama all over its upper. The shoe also features tonal laces with antique gold detailing and is finished with Dr. Marten’s signature yellow stitching.
The collection also includes a backpack made from Masterpiece leather and printed with “The Great Wave”. The Met backpack is fitted with rugged Kiev leather on the straps, gusset and handles and is finished with antique gold and a secure magnetic fastening.
