Dolce&Gabbana‘s latest collection, called Essenza, Italian for Essence, represents for its designers the need to return to the essence of who they are as a brand.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana explained that the collection was not about minimalism, but about simplicity. The collection was primarily black, with occasional flashes of light given by tone-on-tone crystal embroideries, to reference the wet translucence of erupted magma.
The designers said that black is a fundamental signifier for the brand, “almost violent in its intensity.” They explained that they didn’t think about the overall look, but rather about the single piece, making each one outstanding and avoiding distractions.
The collection featured impeccably tailored suits and masterfully sharp-cut coats, with just a touch of pearl grey and two white pantsuits. The designers said that they were attracted to experimenting on new cuts, jackets cut in a new way, new collars, and new fastenings, and that they wanted to enhance the simple complexity of the handmade techniques.
The collection was sensual, with vintage girdles and corsets on bare torsos, and with nudity used as a medium to give emphasis to the beautiful essentiality of the construction. And the finale of the show featured two perfectly fitted jackets in white crêpe cut from the curvaceous patterns of their impeccable women’s blazers.
