A few months after launching a capsule collection with golf brand Malbon, Dockers has given carte blanche to Selema Masekela, son of South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, to create a capsule collection.
Through this collection, Selema Masekela, who defines himself as an entrepreneur, musician, activist and sportsman – he is also known as a sports commentator for ESPN, NBC and NBC Sports Network – pays a vibrant tribute to his father. “He was a trailblazer and someone who was extremely curious. It was that curiosity that allowed him to accomplish so much,” Selema said.
The collection consists of two t-shirts, a classic Dockers chino and sweatshirts with colorful prints. Created in collaboration with Los Angeles-based artist Rannel Ngumuya, the prints are inspired by Selema’s experiences, including his relationship with his father, his music with his band Alekesam, his love of surfing and the ocean and his South African heritage. These prints, in the shape of a surfboard or accompanied by the mirrored font “Selema-Alekesam” embellish the gray and black sweatshirts, and the Harvest Gold colored chino.
“Selema’s style is cool, relaxed and authentic, which is exactly what we wanted to embody with this collection,” expressed Nic Rendic, Global Head of Design at Dockers. “Working with Selema has been so fluid, both in terms of style and values, and our desire is for the free spirit of Selema to come to life through each piece.”
