As the calendar flips over to May, a time when the world raises its banners high in celebration and support of the LGBTQ+ community, tech giant Apple has once again underscored its commitment to equality and advocacy. This year, Apple unveils the Apple Watch Pride Edition 2023, a testament to diversity, inclusivity, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights around the globe.
In a world of monotones, the new Pride Edition Sport Band is a burst of color. Not just any colors, but those that resonate with the symbolism and spirit of the LGBTQ+ community. Unveiled along with a matching watch face and iOS wallpaper, this initiative showcases Apple’s continued support for LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations. These groups are leading the fight for equality, among them are Equality Federation Institute, GLSEN, Encircle, Equality North Carolina, Equality Texas, Gender Spectrum, Human Rights Campaign, ILGA World, the National Center for Transgender Equality, PFLAG, SMYAL, and The Trevor Project.
The new Sport Band design is an ode to the LGBTQ+ community’s strength and beauty. It incorporates the classic pride flag rainbow colors along with five additional hues, each with its own significance. Black and brown symbolize the Black and Latin communities, and also pay tribute to those who have succumbed to or are living with HIV/AIDS. Light blue, pink, and white represent transgender and nonbinary individuals, encapsulating the broad spectrum of identities within the LGBTQ+ community.
The 2023 edition flaunts a myriad of geometric shapes set against a white backdrop. These shapes are compression-molded into the final band, with the base material flowing around each shape, resulting in a unique pattern for every band. This individuality mirrors the distinct identity of each member of the LGBTQ+ community.
