In an intertwining of art, fashion, and real estate, Angelina Jolie has recently made an inspiring move. She’s infusing the legacy of iconic graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat into her latest fashion endeavor, Atelier Jolie.

Angelina Jolie, globally recognized for her compelling screen presence and impactful humanitarian work, is now directing her energy into fashion. What sets this venture apart is the historical setting of its operations – none other than the Manhattan apartment once resided in by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. A decision that speaks volumes about Jolie’s appreciation for the arts and her endeavor to intertwine this essence with her new enterprise, Atelier Jolie.

The hallowed space at 57 Great Jones Street, brokered by real estate veterans John Roesch and Garrett Kelly of Meridian Capital Group, is poised to house this exciting new fashion hub for an impressive eight years. The property, cloaked in the patina of age and adorned with evocative street art, stands as an enduring homage to Basquiat, once part of the graffiti art duo SAMO.

Under Jolie’s patronage, the building will retain this characteristic charm. “Jolie wanted to preserve the older art on [the building] and keep that Basquiat feel to the space,” Roesch confirmed. A testament to Jolie’s reverence for the past and her desire to seamlessly marry it with the future.

The history of this building weaves a fascinating narrative of artistic, culinary, and criminal intrigue. Originating in the 1860s, it was later purchased by the gangster Paul Kelly, then repurposed as a metal works business and kitchen supply company. Andy Warhol took possession in 1970, paving the way for the illustrious career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who leased the second floor from Warhol. In more recent years, the locale transformed into the exclusive Japanese restaurant, Bohemian.

With Atelier Jolie, Angelina envisages a vibrant workshop that will boost underrepresented tailors and artisans worldwide. The artisans will get an opportunity to work and exhibit their creativity right at the heart of 57 Great Jones Street. In this way, Angelina hopes to rejuvenate the fashion world, empowering artists to continue the legacy of innovation and courage that Basquiat symbolizes.

Jolie’s tenacity is evident in her goal to open her novel enterprise “as quickly as possible,” as mentioned by Roesch. The bustling activity within the 6,600 square-foot interior space spread over three floors would be a sight to behold, given the reputation of the actress for her meticulous attention to detail and passion for perfection.

This fascinating convergence of fashion, art, and history, all under the auspices of Angelina Jolie, embodies the spirit of New York’s vibrant culture and the resilience of its artistic community. Through Atelier Jolie, Angelina not only reinforces her commitment to support artisans but also ensures that the spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat continues to pulsate in the heart of Manhattan, inspiring countless generations to come.

The tale of 57 Great Jones Street, previously earmarked by Meridian Capital Group for $60,000 per month for a decade, is ready to turn a new leaf. This time, it’s in the capable hands of Angelina Jolie, a woman who has consistently shown her dedication to the art world. As she sets out on her journey to influence the fashion industry, it is this alliance with Jean-Michel Basquiat that will leave an indelible mark.
