As the soft rhythm of the minimalist melody “I, Philip” by French electronic music producer Rone echoes through the concrete halls of the Tennis Club de Paris, a raw and industrial backdrop, it announces the arrival of the AMI PARIS Spring/Summer 2024 collection, a nod to the art of the 90s minimalism.
The 90s era stands as a beacon in the fashion world, with its stripped-down elegance, an era that could arguably be recognized as the embodiment of the phrase, “less is more.” Alexandre Mattiussi, Founder & Creative Director of AMI PARIS, has harnessed this essence of the 90s, infusing it into a modern-day collection that rings true to the brand’s core value of crafting an “articulate, comprehensive, and pragmatic wardrobe.”
As Mattiussi so eloquently puts it, AMI is “rooted in the real world,” with its creations designed to live, breathe, and evolve in tandem with reality. The Spring/Summer 2024 collection takes this ethos a step further. It strips away the superfluous, focusing on the essential components of a wardrobe – an echo to the brand’s Winter collection.
The collection unfurls within the confines of the Tennis Club de Paris, the large sporting facility famed for its brutalist architecture and sport signage hidden under a carpet of grey, offering a sense of rawness and emptiness to spotlight the collection.
The show brought together an intergenerational mix of models, from the renowned faces of the past such as Guinevere Van Seenus, to the up-and-coming talents of the present. Notable personalities like French actress Catherine Deneuve, South Korean actor Wooshik Choi, and other celebrities added glamour and prestige to the event.
The collection draws inspiration from the iconic 90’s minimalism, reinterpreting essential wardrobe pieces to resonate with the present. Fluid shapes, sharply defined shoulders, and close-fitting silhouettes offer an evolved aesthetic, while pastel and natural summer hues offer a lively contrast to brighter tones. Lush fabrics amplify the collection’s airiness, contributing to the overall lightness and casual appeal of the pieces.
An assortment of bags unveiled throughout the collection underscored AMI’s commitment to simplicity and elegance. Standout pieces included the Paris-Paris, a timeless embodiment of Parisian chic, and the Déjà-Vu, a striped reinterpretation of the Maison’s original signature bag. The collection also marked the introduction of AMI’s first range of sunglasses – a fashionable, unisex addition mirroring the season’s spirit and colors.
As for accessories, AMI’s iconic black and white signature stripe pervaded the collection, marking its presence on the cylindrical heel of a woman’s shoe, and adorning earrings, bracelets, and necklaces in the form of the Ami de Coeur clasp.
