Alexander Wang recently returned to the New York runway with a highly anticipated show, “Cupid’s Door”. The event, which took place in Chinatown near his headquarters, showcased his Pre-Fall and Fall 2023 collections for women and marked the relaunch of his menswear line. This three-in-one showcase proved that Wang’s signature style – a blend of sleekness and streetwear – is still very much alive.
To celebrate the month of love, Wang transformed a back-alley exhibition hall into a romantic and dramatic runway. The double-heart-shaped runway was created using cleverly positioned pink drapes and was complete with a zebra pattern rug and synchronized colored lights. The designer’s first lineup was heavy on outerwear and revisited the popular chubby fur coat, which was made with faux fur. The coats were paired with python and zebra print pants and skirts, adding a touch of boldness to the look.
Wang combined his sporty side with tailoring, incorporating boxers that peeked out above tailored pants, a strap-only bra, and frilly satin slip dresses. Sheer separates revealed glimpses of lingerie, while oversized suit jackets and vests were given a dramatic touch with shimmer.
The men’s lineup was casual-centric, with hoodies, chubby fleece, and python overalls taking center stage. Despite their relaxed demeanor, hints of daring were present, with one male model appearing bare-chested with sweatpants hanging low. For the finale, Wang explored the heart shape on a women’s evening wear group, showcasing bodices and booties adorned with fringe in the shape of the romantic symbol.
The designer’s brand continues to grow, with a new headquarters and store recently opened in South Coast Plaza. By staying true to his vision, Alexander Wang is solidifying his place as a leader in the fashion industry.
